Reflections on my course learning and e-Portfolio

Creating my e-portfolio was very challenging for me. It took me a long time to figure out how to use the program. Technology is one of my weakest skills, but I persevered and was able to complete this daunting project. I was pleased with the design I chose and, in particular, with the colours and the pictures that reflect my personality and my passions. In my “About Me” page, I talked about who I am and where I work, what my objectives, beliefs and goals are in my professional role and my volunteer experiences. On my “Training/Education page, I reviewed my post-secondary and professional education and listed my areas of expertise. In my “Links/Resources” page, I included information and links on the College of Dietitians of Manitoba, the Code of Ethics and the Regulated Health Professions Act. I included my curated course resources both in a Mendeley reference program and within a Word document. I also included links to my classmates e-Portfolios. On my “Blog” page, I included all 3 of my assignments as well as other assignments from throughout the course, complete with pictures and photos. Overall, I am very proud of myself and the work I accomplished to finalize my e-Portfolio.

I really enjoyed taking this course. It was, at times, quite challenging for me as I haven’t been in this type of learning environment for many years. The content of this course contained topics that were both, of interest to me, and relatable to my professional work. I had to open my mind to new thoughts, ideas and theories and do some critical, unbiased thinking about the topics being discussed. I needed to analyze the research, organize and then synthesis the material into a written document that could express my newfound knowledge in a logical and relatable format that could be shared with my fellow students. I very much enjoyed getting to know and working with my classmates. It is clear they are people who are very passionate about their careers, who care about their clients and are excited about pursing higher education in order to meet their professional goals. When I floundered, I felt there was always someone there to help me out. The structure of this course allowed the knowledge, skills and talents of all the students shine through and made this course such an amazing learning experience for me. I think what has impressed me the most is how I have been able to take the lessons I have learned from this course and apply them to my professional practice every day. I feel I approach my work and my clients with much more enthusiasm, caring and compassion. I can implement the concepts and theories I have learned directly into my work environment. In particular, because I work almost exclusively with vulnerable populations, I am able to use the social determinants of health and the multilevel model of health to guide me in my professional practice. Overall, this course has been an incredible journey for me.
